Milwaukee teacher Donelle Johnson, coordinator of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Writing Contest, is the 2016 winner of the WEAC Lewandowski Award for Humanitarian Activities. The award was presented Wednesday at the Milwaukee Teachers’ Education Association Representative Assembly.
Johnson is a longtime MTEA/WEAC member and activist whose work on the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Writing Contest keeps Dr. King’s legacy alive and ensures that thousands of students each year have the opportunity to think deeply about Dr. King’s work, and to reflect on its implications for our current times in writing, speech, and art.
Johnson has played a key role in promoting the writing contest since its inception 33 years ago. She coordinates a committee of teachers who choose the annual theme for the writing, art and speech contests. She also coordinates the judging process for the writing contest, which takes place each November at the MTEA office.
