Two Wauwatosa teachers will enjoy free tickets to a UW-Badgers men’s basketball game as winners of the WEAC-Badgers Red for Public Ed contest.
Kathy Meinecke and Kellie Christensen are Jefferson Elementary School teachers, and each nominated the other for the award. They both say the calling to work with students fuels their commitment to public education and their union.
“I am honored to work with Wisconsin’s youngest learners,” explained Kellie. “Teaching 4K is so rewarding and exciting. I belong to my union because I know it is continually working to protect my rights and will always honor the importance of all teachers. WEAC encourages and supports my desire to improve the quality of education for my students.”
Kathy agreed, adding, “I love my job as an elementary speech/language pathologist. I get the pleasure of working with wonderful students to help develop their communication skills. I am proud to belong to my union because it gives me a voice in the field of education.”
Kellie used her creative spark to nominate Kathy for the award, noting, “Mrs. Meinecke makes us want to ‘Jump Around’ every time she has a lunch group or dresses up like our social cognitive superhero, ‘Superflex!’ She’d slide down Bascom Hill for her students and has more school spirit than Bucky! She’s a ‘Brown-Eyed Girl’ who advocates for her students and loves them more than ice cream from Babcock or pancakes from Mickies. This lifelong Badger educator deserves this special honor!!! Pick Kathy Meinecke and Go Bucky!!”
In the nomination for Kellie, Kathy talked about the 4K teacher’s exceptional heart. “Kellie teaches with love, compassion, and kindness. Kellie spends quality time getting to know her students and their families. She is especially amazing working with students with special needs. Kellie is an amazing educator!!!!”
