Statement on recent school shootings

After the recent school shootings in Waukesha and Oshkosh, along with other threats in Wisconsin schools, the Wisconsin Education Association Council released the following statement:

“This is a moment to reflect on how we come together to create solutions for a better society. The environment inside schools is entirely different than when prior generations attended school. Students are looking to us to stand with them and provide the type of environment where learning happens.

“The first step is to bring educators back to the table and listen to what they have to say. They are the professionals who deal head-on, every day, with the trauma many students bring to school.

“Our union always has, and always will, provide the safe place for people to come forward with their personal experience and real-world solutions, without judgement, a place where all ideas and thoughts are respected and given consideration.”
