Eau Claire teachers provide students, families with meals

For Teacher Appreciation Week, Eau Claire teachers turned the tables to give back to families in a big way.

Eau Claire teachers showed how much they appreciate their students by providing their families with free meals, in a campaign launched by the Eau Claire Association of Educators. Local teachers far exceeded their goal of raising $2,500 for the Feed My People Food Bank, which would pay for 10,000 meals. To kick off this special week, the campaign garnered more than $12,000, which equates to more than 40,000 meals.

South Middle School teacher and ECAE member Brian Wiltgen said the group wants students and their families to not only be well-educated, but also well-fed.

“It’s so difficult not being able to see our children face to face,” said Wiltgen. “It’s even more difficult not knowing what’s happening at home with food and things like that. So we just to make another way that we could help out our students under these unbelievable circumstances.”

Wiltgen said there will be an even bigger need for food in the summer, noting that other union members who would like to support the ECAE’s efforts can donate to the campaign online.
