SESSIONS
Sessions that you may already be familiar with are being offered. These include:
BARGAINING A-Z
This course will help both inexperienced and experienced bargaining committee members deepen their understanding of the entire bargaining process, from beginning to end. General session topics will include: promoting union values through bargaining, committee selection, surveying members and setting priorities, drafting proposals, bargaining law, table techniques, communicating with members and the public, and building bargaining power through member mobilization and action. Portions of the course will divide participants into specialized groups tailored specifically for ESP, K-12 Teachers and Technical College bargaining committees. These groups will learn about their areas of interest on topics such as: living wage campaigns, bargaining strategies for part-time workers, interest arbitration, negotiating professional development and PI-34, bargaining group benefits, costing and understanding school funding and budgets. Workshop participants will also take part in mock bargaining and other interactive exercises emphasizing strategies to build union power through member mobilization and action.
Bargaining Certificate Credit: 16.5 hours Bargaining Skills Core (Any credit hours obtained in excess of the 20-hour Bargaining Skills Core requirement will be applied to the Elective requirement.)
MOVING OUR AGENDA FORWARD: LOCAL ACTIVISM FOR CHANGE
Are you interested in generating and applying the power of your members? Are you ready to be active in your local? Health care, school funding, and professional development are key issues that challenge all of us. Our State's restrictive bargaining laws make improving these areas even more difficult. We know that progressive change won't happen unless we organize our members and communities into a movement for change. This course will explore ways your local can create strategies for change. Topics include: understanding and framing the issues (health care, school funding and professional development); creating a local action plan (getting started), "member-to-member" communications, volunteer recruitment techniques and planning events, turning out member participation, organizing local actions, post action review, and recognition and follow through. Participants will take part in a variety of interactive exercises emphasizing strategies to build union power through member mobilization and action. This course will include participation in the Member-to-Member Communication Experience.
Bargaining Certificate Credit: 10 hours Elective
CONTRACT ENFORCEMENT AND GRIEVANCES - BASIC
Are you getting what you bargained for? The best contract in the world is worthless if you do not know how to enforce it. This nuts and bolts training is essential for members, building representatives and local leaders - anyone who wants to make his/her local stronger. Elements of the grievance process, as well as how to write, file and process a grievance will be the foundation of this session. This course will include participation in the Member-to-Member Communication Experience.
Bargaining Certificate Credit: 10 hours Contract Enforcement Core and 6.5 hours Elective
CONTRACT ENFORCEMENT AND GRIEVANCES - ADVANCED
Designed for those who have experience filing grievances or who perform the duties of a Grievance Officer, this session will go indepth into a number of issues. Complex grievances, grievances that go to the school board and preparing for arbitration are some of the topics to be covered. A WERC representative will present and answer questions. Case law on grievances and contract enforcement will also be reviewed. This course will include participation in the Member-to-Member Communication Experience.
Bargaining Certificate Credit: 10 hours Contract Enforcement Core and 6.5 hours Elective
EMERGING VOICES
You are an Emerging Voice if... you are new member of the Association or are contemplating getting more involved; you do not hold an officer position but might commit to one after knowing more about the organization; you believe that being a teacher or ESP goes beyond your classroom/building duties; you believe in social justice and want to be involved in ensuring that Wisconsin maintains quality public schools; you want to know how the Association can help you to become a better professional, leader, and advocate for quality public schools, and the children and staff that attend them. This track will emphasize hands-on learning to better understand and experience the organization to include covering the Association structure, organizing, professional development issues of your choice, and programs and resources within the Association in engaging, informative, (and yes, fun!) ways. If this track intrigues you, sign up and be prepared for a great experience! This course will include participation in the Member-to-Member Communication Experience.
LOCAL GOVERNANCE DEVELOPMENT
This course is specifically designed for local governance officers to provide a framework to develop a plan for the upcoming year and understand the tools and resources available to assist their local. Topics will include: fiscal roles and responsibilities, understanding the local's participation in actions around the strategic priorities, local, state and national political action, reaching members with effective communications, the NEA, WEAC, UniServ, local interrelationship, and more. In a special breakout session the latest on membership tracking and IMIDAS, accounting procedures including budgeting, reporting, tracking and audits, IRS and other governmental regulations, and internal controls will be addressed with time to use the web-based tools. Local leaders will return with ideas and plans to organize and build capacity to be successful in meeting the needs of their members. Teams are welcome, but space is limited; all registrations will be forwarded to the WEAC President for approval in order to distribute participation across the state. This course will include participation in the Member-to-Member Communication Experience.
NEA MINORITY LEADER TRAINING PROGRAM
As part of the National Education Association's commitment to quality public education and equity for all, NEA Human and Civil Rights coordinates the Minority Leadership Training Program (MLTP), a state-based program that involves minorities in Association activities and prepares them for leadership roles. Through a sequential, multiple-training curriculum, the MLTP provides minority members with the skills they need to become effective leaders in their schools, communities, and the Association. Elements of the MLTP's essential resources curriculum will be included for emerging and experienced leaders. This truly unique training opportunity is being offered for the first time at the WEAC Summer Academy. This course will include participation in the Member-to-Member Communication Experience.
CRISIS PREPAREDNESS
"You will respond to your next crisis not as you want to be, but as you are!" is the wisdom learned by those who have responded to a crisis at a school. Many schools, districts and communities have crisis planning teams and they need well informed members to be part of the design of workable local plans. This course will review the three phases of disaster preparedness as they apply to schools: Being Prepared Before a Crisis, Being Responsive During a Crisis, and Being Thorough After a Crisis. Resources at the national, state and local level will be covered as well as tips for personal preparedness. Time will be dedicated to lessons learned from recent incidents nationally and in Wisconsin. You will have time in groups to review issues unique to either K-12 schools or Technical Colleges campuses. The course will be useful in preparing for all types of disasters whether they are natural, accidents, or acts of violence. Arrive curious, leave prepared!
This course qualifies for PDA ESP Certificate credit.
