Governor Jim Doyle issued vetoes and signed a budget repair bill into law on May 16, 2008.
Dissatisfied with the budget fix passed by legislators earlier in the week, Governor Doyle put his own mark on the budget adjustment bill.
In vetoing a provision pushing off a $125 million school aid payment until the next biennium, Governor Doyle said in his veto address, “Delaying a school aid payment weakens Wisconsin’s financial balance sheet, and more importantly, creates the risk of a significant cut to education in the next biennial budget. I have always been clear that education is my top priority because it is Wisconsin’s top priority.”
Through his vetoes, Governor Doyle also increased from $69 million to $270 million cuts in state spending and built a reserve of more than $100 million over the biennium contrasted with the Legislature’s proposed level of $25 million which he characterized as imprudent even under good economic conditions.
