Measure passes as panel prepares to hold hearing on petition to dissolve
Residents of the Wausaukee School District in northeastern Wisconsin passed a referendum on Tuesday (August 19, 2008) to allow the district to exceed the state revenue limits by $675,000 for 10 years.
Voters had twice previously rejected referendums to exceed the revenue limits. Even with the vote in favor to exceed revenue limits, it will be the School Boundary Appeal Board that will affirm or deny dissolution of the school district.
Shortly after scheduling the referendum in July, Wausaukee School Board members voted to proceed with dissolution, citing concerns about their ability to continue offering students a quality education under tightening budget constraints. District Superintendent Jan Dooley said it was expected that the community’s vote to exceed revenue limits will make a difference in the Appeal Board’s decision.
The board is set to meet August 26, 2008, for the first public hearing on the petition to dissolve. A decision by the Appeal Board must come no later than January 15, 2009. If the request is approved, the district and its assets would be divided between its neighbors by July 1, 2009.
The most recent dissolution of a school district in Wisconsin occurred in 1990.
