Southern Lakes United Educators-Retired recently awarded $1,000 in grants to five teachers whose proposals would benefit a number of teachers and their students over an extended period of time. Linda Oja from Karcher Middle School in Burlington will buy a violin for an underprivileged student in her strings program. Sonia Lee at Phoenix Middle School in Delavan will buy eight Sansa MP3 players to improve the literacy of her English Language Learners. Robyn Leary, a counselor from Riverview School in Silver Lake, will create 10 book bags for students and their families about guidance topics. Jackie Bladow from Dover Center in Franksville will order a Playaway Listening Center to improve quality time with guided reading groups. Kathy Schaal, a special education teacher at Waller School in Burlington, will purchase equipment to benefit children with sensory integration difficulties, attention deficit disorders, autism, and /or cognitive disabilities.
There were 20 applications for grants. SLUE-R members wanted to help everyone with their excellent projects, but were limited by the available funds. The membership of SLUE-Retired includes educators and support staff members who remain involved in education. Proceeds from the sale of donated lunches at meetings, contributions from active and inactive members, and the annual silent auction provided funds for the grants.
