of Democratic governor hopefuls
in the August 14 Primary Election

Three things to know this week:

  • All eight Democratic candidates for governor debated Thursday night. Find out more.
  • Sunday marks another gubernatorial debate for Democratic candidates. The so-called Wisconsin’s Choice ‘Final Four’ Dem Guv Forum starts at 6 p.m. and features Mike McCabe, Mahlon Mitchell, Kelda Roys and Kathleen Vinehout.
  • State Superintendent and Democratic governor hopeful Tony Evers is engaged in dueling billboards with Governor Walker.

U.S. Senate. The race between Leah Vukmir and Kevin Nicholson continues to boil leading up to the August 14 GOP primary. The national Club for Growth has a new TV ad that says President Trump “needs fighters in the Senate” like Republican Kevin Nicholson. Meanwhile, Vukmir has earned the stamp of approval from the state GOP. The TV ad is the first from the group following its endorsement of Nicholson last year in the race for U.S. Senate. It also follows a spot from Wisconsin Next PAC, which is backing Vukmir. That ad said Trump needs an ally in the Senate, but that’s “not Kevin Nicholson.” The winner of the August 14 primary will face WEAC-recommended candidate U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin. Senator Baldwin raised about $4.4 million last quarter – a record for a federal candidate from Wisconsin.

Congressional District 1. There’s a debate tonight between candidates Randy Bryce and Cathy Myers in Kenosha.

Senate District 1. Senate Minority Leader Jennifer Shilling, D-La Crosse, appointed WEAC-backed Senator Caleb Frostman, D-Sturgeon Bay, to the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation Board of Directors. Frostman will replace Sen. Tim Carpenter. Prior to his bid for the Senate, Frostman served as the executive director for the Door County Economic Development Corp.

Pundits ponder August primary. A Democratic campaign strategist is saying the gubernatorial primary is still an open race. Joe Zepecki, who previously worked for Democratic campaigns at the state and federal level, pointed to state Superintendent Tony Evers, former state Representative Kelda Roys, union leader Mahlon Mitchell and Milwaukee attorney Matt Flynn.
