Two bills on rehiring retired teachers are circulating in the Legislature, one introduced by democrats and the other by republicans. The bills would allow WRS teacher annuitants to return to work as substitute teachers and continue to receive their annuities. The only difference between the two bills is the date of expiration.

Other Bills We’re Watching

Climate Change & Energy Efficiency. Senate democrats have introduced a series of bills on climate change and energy efficiency:

  • Model academic standards for climate change and grants for curriculum (SB 761)
  • Energy efficiency grants for school districts (SB 762)
  • Climate change scholarships (SB 763)
  • Research positions at the UW (SB 764)

Note: Some bills additionally call for increases in funding for special education. That relates to a requirement with the federal government that, if the state increases funding in certain areas, it must put more money into special education.
