Book Study: The Privateers

MTEA, in collaboration with WPEN, will host a book study of the new Josh Cowen book “The Privateers.” Cowen’s book looks at the history of the Voucher and Charter school movement in this country, from its history in the segregated south through its implementation in Milwaukee in the ’90s. Cowen looks at the growth, the negative impact on public school systems, the enormous price tag, and the lack of measurable outcomes in the following decades.

This group will kick off at a WPEN event where the author will speak to Public Education activists and educators on Thursday, January 23 followed by a biweekly virtual meeting to discuss the book. Participants will expand their understanding of the history of the privatization of public schools in this country and be energized as we enter the budget season, where public school champions will need to rally to fight for funding for Wisconsin Public Schools.
