Union-Recommended Candidates and Referendums Prevail in Spring Elections
April 3, 2024
The next Wisconsin election is the Primary Election on Tuesday, August 13.
WEAC recommends a NO vote on both constitutional amendments to maintain just, efficient and timely distribution of federal funds for all Wisconsinites. Voting NO on both will protect our communities and ensure our governor can continue to provide timely support in times of need.
Why are educators voting no on the constitutional amendments?
Public school educators teach and inspire every single who walks through our schoolhouse doors, no exceptions, and in times of emergencies families and communities depend on us to provide resources to get them through hard times and make sure the kids are OK.
So, we’re extremely concerned about this attempt to take away the emergency power of the governor – laid out in the Constitution – away. It’s a sneaky trick on voters that would result in schools having to wait longer for funding for repairs, counseling services, even food and water, in the times our students and families need them most.
Why do you think this is being proposed?
It’s a power grab, to take away a governor’s power to distribute emergency funds. This would prevent any governor’s power laid out in the State Constitution forever, no matter who holds the governor’s office.
About the amendments
These potential changes will impact both the delegation of appropriation power and the process for allocating federal money. These are large sweeping changes that will impact a wide range of issues voters care about, from education to the environment to how quickly the government can respond to emergencies (like a public health crisis or natural disaster).
Who else is voting no?
This would be a fundamental, forever change to our state constitution. That’s why non-partisan groups like the League of Women Voters are leading the Vote No efforts. The educator-members of the Wisconsin Education Association agree with them, because we’re the ones who are face-to-face with students in times of emergency and disaster. It’s easy for politicians to play games, they aren’t there seeing the desperate need in times of crisis. Teachers and education support professionals are.
