Retirement Requirements

For Retirements Effective July 1, 2020 and After

On May 28, 2020, the MPS School Board passed that the requirements to receive Retirement benefits for employees hired prior to July 1, 2013 is as follows:

Retiree Health Requirements:

  • Must currently be in a benefit eligible position at the time of retirement
  • Must be enrolled in the medical plan
  • Age 55 or older on the date of retirement
  • 20 years or more of service on the date of retirement
  • 70% of the maximum sick leave full hours on the date of retirement (i.e., 812 hours for 10-month employees and 840 hours for 12-month employees) in order to receive Board paid subsidy
    • Note: Half-pay hours convert to full-pay sick leave hours for meeting retiree health eligibility requirements
    • If you do not have the required sick leave balance as of your retirement date but you meet the age and service requirements, you can self-pay for the health insurance.
  • All employees are still required to give the Office of Human Resources a 30-day notice prior to their last day of employment

Retiree Life Insurance Requirements:

  • Must currently be in a benefit eligible position at the time of retirement
  • Age 55 or older on the date of retirement
  • 20 years or more of MPS service on the date of retirement
    • Note: Food Service, CHA, SNA and Building Service Helpers if hired on or after 7/1/86 are not eligible for retiree life insurance coverage.

Retirement Form:  This form must be sent to MPS.  There is a box to check for retirement.

Certificated Resignation Form – This is for members in our Teachers Unit, including, but not limited to, teachers, intern teachers with an individual teaching contract, guidance counselors, school social workers, school nurses, librarians, speech pathologists, occupational therapists, and physical therapists.

Classified Resignation Form – This is for members in our Educational Assistant (paraprofessionals, safety assistants, parent coordinators, interrupters); ESP-150 (BSH I & II, FSA, Kitchen Mangagers, CHAs); Substitute Teachers; and Accoutant/Bookkeepers.
