National Board Certification

It’s a university or the DPI in most states that serve as the resource provider for National Board Certification. Due to our reputation for quality in Wisconsin it is our Union’s WEA Academy.

National Board Certification is considered the highest level of certification an educator can achieve. It is commonly referred to as the gold standard of teacher certification. The WEA Academy offers WEAC members a robust variety of supports to assist member candidates including, summer Jump Start sessions, winter writing retreats, school year support cohorts, and one-to-one mentoring.

The research is clear. Schools with National Board-Certified Teachers (NBCTs) are characterized by better teacher morale, higher retention, and increased community and parent satisfaction. The data further demonstrate that NBCTs make a direct impact on student learning. Studies have found that the positive impact of having a board-certified teacher is even greater for low-income students and students of color.

On top of this, becoming an NBCT is the perfect way to give yourself a pay raise. Many employing school districts provide additional compensation, and the State of Wisconsin provides all National Board-Certified Teachers with an annual stipend.
